Often it is bloggers themselves that uncover online hoaxes that the mainstream press falls for. Dan Gillmor highlights the case of bloggers investigative the existence of Kaycee Nicole, a blogger who wrote about dying from leukemia. After investigating court records and sharing findings they eventually revealed that Kaycee did not exist (Gillmor, 2004).
