Often it is bloggers themselves that uncover online hoaxes that the mainstream press falls for. Dan Gillmor highlights the case of bloggers investigative the existence of Kaycee Nicole, a blogger who wrote about dying from leukemia. After investigating court records and sharing findings they eventually revealed that Kaycee did not exist (Gillmor, 2004).

Unbossed.com undertook its own investigations into toll roads, including the finding that "Local governments in Colorado have agreed to deliberately impede traffic on existing highways near a toll road in order to protect the toll roads' investors." (Rosen, 2007b)
